[Visual Stimuli.] Cherry Blossoms in Washington D.C.

Washington, DC is well known for its cherry blossoms around the tidal basin. In 1912 Japan gave 3,000 sakura trees to the United States as a gift, then in 1956, another 3,800 were given. Each spring their blooming brings tens of thousands of tourists to West Potomac Park to see the blooms. The flowers range in color from bright ping to pure white, sometimes on trees right next to each other.

I also have other pictures from Washington, D.C.

Japanese Pagoda
From the base, looking up it. This stone pagoda was a gift from Ryozo Hiranuma, the Mayor of Yokohama to former District Commissioner Renah Camalier in 1957. A year later (April 21, 1958) the pagoda was dedicated as a gift from Japan to the United States.

Road at East Potomac Park
Looking up the road, the Cherry trees are in full bloom and the Washington Monument is visible in the background. East Potomac Park is within walking distance of the tidal basin. It also has many cherry trees, but isn't as crowded.

Lots of people walking and looking at Cherry Blossoms
Yes, their really are that many people. This is the most popular area of the tidal basin, the crowds do thin somewhat as you get farther away from here.

The other big draw around the tidal basin is the Jefferson Memorial. This is also a great place to watch firewords on the Fourth of July.

Dirt path through the Cherry Blossoms
Despite the apparent serenity, there are lots of people around. Sometimes you just have to wait for the right moment to take the picture.
